The death toll from Sunday's tsunamis jumped sharply today to over 138,000 after Indonesia reported nearly 80,000 people were killed in that country alone. Emergency workers said that in some parts of Indonesia's Aceh province as many as one in four people are dead.

Many have been asking how they can help with the Tsunami disaster in South Asia. HOPE worldwide teams are providing disaster relief in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India.

At this time, the primary needs are for water, food, body bags, disposal of bodies, and labor. Without question, the fastest and most effective means of supplying these needs is through cash gifts.

Gifts of Supplies
Several have inquired about collecting and sending supplies to those in need. The urgently required supplies are most rapidly and economically obtained in local markets. Transportation costs associated with the needed materials often exceed the cost to obtain equivalent materials nearby. In addition, the challenge of importation often produces undesired costs and/or delays. As discussed above, the urgent need is for funding to support the teams providing the direct relief and to purchase supplies locally. We deeply appreciate the outpouring of support from so many around the world. Your donations will be multiplied in effect by the direct labors of those you support. We will ensure that a minimum of 85% of all cash donations reach the direct needs of those being served.

The magnitude of the personal losses through this disaster may never be fully comprehended. HOPE worldwide is honored to be used to help bring hope to a hurting world.
